Every year, I curate a list of my favorite portrait session location in and around Denver, as well as a few iconic Colorado spots across the state. I love locations that have diversity all within walking distance so we can get multiple 'looks' without having to drive far. I'll also state if the location is Free or a Photography Permit is needed. So let's dive in:
Lookout Mountain - Golden/Evergreen Area - Free Fabulous all year round and looks great with snow, fog, rain, sun. If you want a mountain view, this is the best option as we can typically (weather permitting) see the continental divide in the background. There's an area with pine trees for the wooded, mountain look as well as an outcropping for the amazing mountain view. Erin+Clark | John+Tiffany |Christy+Adam's Family Session
Chatfield State Park - Littleton - Free I love this area for the diverse scenery all within a 5-10 minute walk. Lake scene, wooded area and open field areas. The recent flooding has also left some really cool drift wood features. There are some cactus in the field areas so a good pair of walking shoes is recommended in-between photographing. War Memorial Rose Garden - Littleton - Free The best time to photograph here is in July/August when the roses are blooming. It's a quaint little rose garden that has an English feel to it and when in bloom, the area is filled with colors, including little white flowers on the bushes and sometimes even in the grass. It's truly a hidden gem. Bailie+Trevor
Roxborough State Park - Littleton - $20-ish This is my favorite for anyone wanting the iconic Red Rocks in the background. The small photography permit is minimal and since it's a state park, car entrance fees are also required. But, most of the trails are right next to the red rocks and don't have the fences that the amphitheater area has. Another perk? Less people. There's also a fabulous view from the neighboring golf course we can hit up (five minute drive) and a beautiful open space a few miles away (ten minute drive). Please note that this area requires us to stay on the trail due to it being rattlesnake country. Mary Kate+Jake
Roxborough/Chatfeild Open Space - Littleton - Free This is a small open space not labeled on the corner of Rampart Range Road and Titan Parkway just north of Roxborough State Park. This location is mostly a horse trail with an amazing view of the foothills for the background. Afternoon/Evening sessions work best and little ones probably won't do very well here as some of the trails and brush are taller. Definitely not a picnic location but the foliage is unique, the view is amazing and if we hike back for a few minutes, we run into a pond. I love this area because Chatfield State Park is in the background so it's one of the rare locations where you truly get a picturesque view of the foothills not blocked by buildings. Please note that this area is not young/small child friendly. Andrew+Kristen
Highlands Ranch Mansion - Highlands Ranch - Free If you want a stately location with a beautiful mansion, garden and a grand driveway that feels inspired by Italy, then this is your place. We have to photograph during visitation hours, which is limited but this is definitely a hidden gem in the suburbs. A beautiful flowy gown and tux with a gorgeous picnic would be a perfect fit. Mike+Danielle
Daniel's Park - Littleton/Highlands Ranch - Free This is a trail space filled with brush and flat rocks with an amazing view of the foothills and taller mountain peaks. There is a small parking lot and easy five-ten minute walk. I do recommend bringing flats to walk in and a blanket to sit on. This location is best photographed in the late afternoon/evening hours as the background is west-facing. Grace+Conor
Lair O' the Bear - Morrison - Free A fun spot that features a river, open space and lots of trees. There's usually quite a few people here (popular trail and mountain biking) so we're often dodging people but it definitely embodies the diversity I love to have at locations. The flood several years ago destroyed parts of this open space so keep in mind that some parts may still be difficult to get too. It's also in a valley that doesn't get as much sun so jackets are always a good idea just in case.
Evergreen Lake House - Evergreen - Free Mountains, a lake, wildlife and a park area. Need I say more? It's a great location with a lot of diversity. Definitely bring a few blankets and since we're in the mountains next to a lake, the temperate can drop quick so be sure to bring a jacket. Mary+David
Sand Dunes National Park - Alamosa - approx $50 Probably one of the coolest areas to visit in Colorado and to photograph here is always so much fun. It does require a hotel stay as it's a 3.5 hour drive from Denver metro but one could say it's a once-in-a-lifetime photo opportunity. Spring/Summer is a really fun time to visit as the river runs next to the dunes with actual waves. It's also a windier location so flowy gowns look beautiful. Kevin+Crystal
Larimer Square - Downtown Denver - Free If you're wanting the hustle and bustle of the city, Larimer Square is a great option. The pretty market lights are strung across the street and make for a fun backdrop. There's also a few little nooks like windows and seats for backgrounds and yes, the must-have kissing in the street photo at dusk. Parking is around $20. This also isn't a great location if there's rain and snow but the sunny summer months are fabulous for this urban spot. Keep in mind that downtown is a busy location so we'll be dodging/working with crowds. Heather+Brandon
Performing Arts Center - Downtown Denver - Free If you're wanting a more artistic urban location, this is a great spot that features graffiti, lots of architecture, different walls and we can even include the dancing giants. Keep in mind that downtown is a busy location so we'll be dodging/working with crowds. Annie+Kevin
Ya Ya's Farm and Orchard - Longmont - $100 for Two Hours Apple Blossoms for a background is the ultimate sign of springtime. Blossoms tend to be from Easter to Mother's Day. If you're wanting actual apples instead of blossoms, fruit ripens July-September. A reservation is required with the venue.
